Flannery Saves Comedy… From Himself
“What day is today? Today is Mother’s Day!”
New York, Ny. | May 11, 2025 – The anticipation of Home Box Office Entertainment’s response in the joke theft case of Flannery v. HBO built to a disappointing climax today, as Plaintiff Flannery failed to serve the Defendants, HBO and Gary Gulman, with their summons. With the 90-day window passing, Judge ABC may be left wondering whether this effort was nothing more than a frivolous flight of frantic fanaticism, or, quite possibly, an insidious attempt to change how United States copyright law is applied to stand-up comedy performances.
When kicked in the shins for an explanation for how he could possibly have forgotten, Flannery annoyed this reporter once again with his mischievous smile and shared, “Maybe I was playing around with the electroshock equipment in the ECT Procedure room at UCONN Health last month and caused some memory loss.”
Not to be bullshitted anymore than our readers, nor insulted by his repeating a joke about memory loss being a known effect of electroshock that he stated in a previous press release on this matter, there must be more that this effervescent coward can say about this lawsuit which was supposed to be remembered as a landmark case in U.S. history that placed him on alongside George Carlin and Lenny Bruce on Wikipedia, but maybe there isn’t.
“Okay, you want the truth? I’m not sure how truth will play, but here ya go. When I filed the lawsuit, I said ‘fuck it’ to the consequences of this thing ruining comedy. I thought the subject-matter of the jokes was more important. But, when it came down to actually pushing the button by serving these guys, I guess, I had to listen to my own words and ‘find a better way.’”
Maybe the truth is a little more than I’m qualified to write about, but if this is the truth, then one can only wonder exactly how mentally ill Mr. Flannery can possibly be if he resisted pushing the detonator on the ruinator of stand-up comedy all this time. Perhaps I was wrong all along and he is more of an artist than an activist… then again, supposedly, I wouldn’t recognize the Truth if it blinked me in the face.
